Verizon Small Business Email Shutdown: Where to Go Next

Legacy Verizon/Yahoo small-business mail users need a new host. Migration checklist for custom domains.

Businesses on legacy Verizon and Yahoo small-business mail plans can find their mailboxes discontinued or unsupported. Move to a modern host before you lose DNS access.

First, secure your domain

Legacy small-business mail plans often bundled the domain, the website and the mailboxes. Before you move anything, find out where the domain is registered and make sure you can log in there. If you cannot change DNS records, you cannot move your mail — and losing the domain is far worse than losing a mailbox.

Migration checklist

  1. Confirm access to the domain’s registrar and DNS settings
  2. Export or copy mail you want to keep, over IMAP if the old service still allows it
  3. Create mailboxes on your new host with the same addresses
  4. Replace the MX records and add SPF, DKIM and DMARC
  5. Point phones and desktop clients at the new IMAP/SMTP settings
  6. Keep the old account until you are sure nothing still arrives there

Where OquMail fits

OquMail is free for up to 15 mailboxes on your own domain, with webmail and IMAP/SMTP for Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and phone apps. You keep the domain at your registrar and add the records we generate. Our guide to moving email between mailboxes over IMAP covers copying old mail.

Want to see how your own domain is set up? Use the free SPF checker, DMARC checker and MX lookup: they run in your browser and store nothing.
