What actually exists for free

Tradeoffs to accept
Some free hosts are webmail-only; Zoho’s free plan, for example, leaves out IMAP. OquMail works in webmail and in IMAP/SMTP clients (IMAP mail.oqumail.com:993 SSL/TLS, SMTP :587 STARTTLS), so Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and phone apps all work on the free plan.
