How to Look Bigger Than You Are (Without Lying)
Professional email, role addresses, and DNS authentication — legitimacy signals for lean teams.
Two-person startups compete with fifty-person vendors. You cannot fake headcount — but you can remove tells that scream "we just started yesterday."
Remove the tells, do not invent headcount
The goal is not to pretend you have a large team. It is to remove the signs that suggest a business is temporary: a free webmail address, a missing website, invoices from a personal account. Customers are not put off by small; they are put off by uncertain.
Signals that are cheap to fix
- An address on your own domain for everything customer-facing
- Role addresses such as support@ and billing@ so each type of request has a clear home
- A consistent signature with your name, role, company and website
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC published, so your mail passes the checks mailbox providers run
- A website that matches the domain in your email address
What not to do
- Do not invent staff names or fake job titles — clients find out, and it destroys trust
- Do not make up client logos, testimonials or numbers
- Do not answer as “the team” if it is only you and the client asks directly — honesty about size is fine
Want to see how your own domain is set up? Use the free SPF checker and DMARC checker: they run in your browser and store nothing.
