Email Reputation for New Domains: A Realistic Timeline

Week one to month three — what to expect when your domain has no sending history.

Fresh domains are guilty until proven innocent. Warm up with transactional mail to engaged users before any bulk outreach.

Quick summary

  • First weeks: one-to-one mail and transactional messages to people who expect them — replies to customers, sign-up confirmations, receipts
  • Next: grow volume gradually as more users sign up, rather than in sudden jumps
  • Later: add newsletters to opted-in subscribers, ideally from a separate subdomain
  • Never: cold bulk outreach from your main domain
  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC passing from day one

Why new domains start with less trust

Mailbox providers judge senders partly on history. A domain registered last week has none, and many spam campaigns use freshly registered domains. That does not mean your mail will be blocked — it means providers watch more closely at first.

A sensible ramp-up

  • First weeks: one-to-one mail and transactional messages to people who expect them — replies to customers, sign-up confirmations, receipts
  • Next: grow volume gradually as more users sign up, rather than in sudden jumps
  • Later: add newsletters to opted-in subscribers, ideally from a separate subdomain
  • Never: cold bulk outreach from your main domain

What speeds it up

  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC passing from day one
  • Recipients opening, replying to and saving your messages
  • Low bounce rates — validate addresses at sign-up
  • Consistent sending, rather than silence followed by a big blast

Watch the signals

Every provider decides on its own schedule, so there is no fixed number of days. Watch what you can measure: bounces and their reasons in your delivery log, and complaint and reputation data in tools like Google Postmaster Tools once you send enough to Gmail users.
