Set Up Business Email in Samsung Email and Other Android Mail Apps

Add a mailbox on your own domain to Samsung Email: the manual IMAP screens, the port, security and authentication settings, and the same values for other apps.

Android phones come with one of two mail apps. Pixels and most non-Samsung phones use Gmail, which has its own guide. Samsung phones ship Samsung Email, which handles a mailbox on your own domain as a manual IMAP account and connects to the server directly, with no cloud in between. The setup is two screens and takes a few minutes. The same host and port values work in Thunderbird for Android, FairEmail, Spark and the mail apps on Xiaomi and Huawei phones.

Quick answer

Samsung Email, Settings, Add account, Other. Enter your address and webmail password, tap Manual setup, choose IMAP account. Incoming: server mail.oqumail.com, security type SSL, port 993, username your full address. Outgoing: server mail.oqumail.com, security type TLS, port 587, Require authentication on, same username and password. Tap Sign in.

The settings you will enter

  • Incoming (IMAP) server: mail.oqumail.com, port 993, SSL/TLS on
  • Outgoing (SMTP) server: mail.oqumail.com, port 587, STARTTLS (apps that offer only an SSL switch: on, with port 587)
  • Username: your full email address, for both incoming and outgoing
  • Password: the same password you use for OquMail webmail

Step by step in Samsung Email

  1. Open Samsung Email. Tap the menu (three lines), the gear icon, then Add account. On first launch the account list appears by itself.
  2. Choose Other (not Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo).
  3. Enter your full email address and webmail password, then tap Manual setup at the bottom rather than Sign in.
  4. Choose IMAP account.
  5. Incoming server settings: Email address and User name both your full address, Password, IMAP server mail.oqumail.com, Security type SSL, Port 993. Leave the IMAP path prefix empty.
  6. Outgoing server settings: SMTP server mail.oqumail.com, Security type TLS, Port 587, Require authentication to send emails on, User name your full address, Password.
  7. Tap Sign in. Samsung Email checks both servers and opens the sync options: choose how far back to sync (two weeks is a good default) and the sync schedule, then tap Done.
  8. Send a test message to another address you own and reply from there.

Other Android mail apps

Every Android mail app asks for the same six values. Where the app offers a security choice for the outgoing server, pick STARTTLS or TLS on port 587, not SSL on 587.

  • Thunderbird for Android (formerly K-9 Mail): Add account, enter the address, then Manual setup. IMAP mail.oqumail.com 993 SSL/TLS; SMTP mail.oqumail.com 587 STARTTLS; Normal password.
  • FairEmail: Setup, Other provider, enter the address and password, Advanced to type the hosts and ports if detection fails.
  • Xiaomi and Huawei Mail: Other account, then manual IMAP with the same values; the security option for SMTP may be labelled STARTTLS.
  • Gmail app on any Android phone: follow the Gmail app guide.

Useful settings

  • Sync schedule: Settings, the account, Sync settings. Every 15 minutes or Push (IMAP IDLE) if the app offers it; Push keeps the connection open and uses slightly more battery.
  • Notifications: turn them on for the work account only, and use Android's notification channels to silence newsletters.
  • Signature: Settings, the account, Signature; include your name, business and phone number.
  • Sent folder: Settings, the account, Folder settings or Mailbox mapping; confirm Sent points at the server folder so webmail shows what you sent from the phone.

If something goes wrong

  • "Cannot connect to server" on the incoming step: the server must be exactly mail.oqumail.com with SSL on port 993.
  • Outgoing step fails: the usual cause is Security type SSL on port 587. Change it to TLS (STARTTLS).
  • authentication (proof that email really comes from your company) failed: the user name must be the full address and the password the webmail one. Test it in webmail first.
  • Mail arrives on the phone hours late: the sync schedule is Manual or the app is battery-restricted. Set a schedule and exempt the app from battery optimisation.

Common questions

Should I pick POP3 or IMAP?

IMAP. It keeps the phone, webmail and your laptop in sync. POP3 downloads and may delete mail from the server, and OquMail is used over IMAP.

Will deleting on the phone delete everywhere?

Yes, with IMAP a deletion is a server action. Use Archive if you want mail out of the inbox but kept.

Can I add two business addresses?

Yes. Repeat the steps for each; Samsung Email shows them separately and in a combined inbox.
